SUSTAINABILITY · OUR COMMITMENT

WE MAKE THINGS.
WE OWN THE
IMPACT OF THAT.

Making things has consequences. Materials are used. Waste is produced. Energy is consumed. We don't pretend otherwise — but we do work hard every day to minimise what we take and maximise what we give back.

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING
WE KNOW EXACTLY WHERE EVERYTHING COMES FROM
Traceability isn't a sustainability buzzword for us — it's how we purchase. Every material in every Castaway mould has a verified source, a known manufacturer, and a supply chain we can account for.

Platinum Silicone
EU & UK · Verified Manufacturer
We source exclusively from established EU and UK manufacturers with documented production standards. Choosing regional suppliers reduces transport emissions, supports local industry, and gives us full traceability from raw material to finished mould. We can tell you exactly where it came from. We always will.

PLA Filament
UK PRINTED · PLANT-BASED MATERIAL
Our support frames and speed clips are 3D-printed in the UK using PLA  filament. PLA (polylactic acid) is derived from plant starch — corn, sugarcane, or cassava — making it one of the most sustainable printing materials available. All offcuts, failed prints, and end-of-life frames are collected for recycling through our CastOff programme.

Packaging
RIGHT-SIZED · NO EXCESS
Every mould ships in packaging sized to the product. We don't use oversized boxes padded with single-use plastic. The rigid frame protects the silicone in transit, reducing the need for additional packaging materials. Where protective filling is used, it is recyclable. We're working toward fully plastic-free dispatch by the end of 2026.
WASTE MANAGEMENT

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR WASTE

Manufacturing creates waste. We've built our production process to minimise it at every stage — and to ensure that what we can't eliminate, we put to use.

Here's an honest breakdown of where our waste comes from and what we do with it.

FULLY RECYCLED
PLA Print Waste
Failed prototype prints, support structures, test pieces, and end-of-life frames are all collected and fed into our CastOff recycling stream. PLA is compostable under industrial conditions and recyclable through specialist filament recycling programmes. Nothing goes to landfill.

REPURPOSED
Prototype Intermediate Moulds
During development, we use tin-cure silicone for early prototype testing before committing to platinum. Used prototype moulds are retained and reused for internal testing and geometry validation wherever possible, extending their working life before disposal.

MINIMISED
Silicone Waste
Silicone cannot currently be recycled at scale in the UK. We minimise waste through precise pour calculations and mould volume optimisation. We're monitoring developments in silicone recycling closely and will update our practice as viable options become available.

MINIMAL
Packaging Waste
Right-sized packaging, minimal materials, and a preference for cardboard over plastic at every decision point. Where we currently use any plastic-based materials, we have identified alternatives and are transitioning progressively toward fully plastic-free dispatch.
INTRODUCING CASTOFF

CASTOFF

WASTE TO ART · AN ACTIVE CASTAWAY INITIATIVE

Every 3D printing operation generates waste. Failed prints. Structural supports. Prototype iterations. Test pieces. In most workshops, this material ends up in a bin.

At Castaway, it becomes something else entirely.

CastOff is our waste-to-art programme, turning collected PLA waste from our production process into hand-finished art objects. Every piece is unique — formed from the offcuts, failures, and experiments that are an unavoidable part of making something properly.

CastOff pieces are available directly from Castaway. Each one comes with a certificate of origin detailing which production run the material came from. It's the most honest thing we make.

OUR COMMITMENTS
WHAT WE'RE DOING. WHAT WE'RE WORKING TOWARD.

UK & EU Sourcing
All silicone and primary materials sourced from verified EU and UK suppliers. Shorter supply chains, lower transport emissions, full traceability.

Zero PLA to Landfill
Every piece of PLA waste from our production is collected and recycled or repurposed through CastOff. None goes to landfill.

Plastic-Free Dispatch
Working toward fully plastic-free packaging by end of 2026. Right-sized cardboard packaging as standard today, with active transition away from any remaining plastic materials.

Honest Reporting
We won't claim to be perfect. We'll be transparent about what we do, what we're working toward, and where we're still figuring it out. No greenwashing. Ever.
AN HONEST WORD

WE'RE NOT PERFECT. WE'RE TRYING.

Sustainability in small-scale manufacturing is genuinely hard. We're a home-based business making precision products from specialist materials — not all of which have clean, simple end-of-life solutions.

We think the right approach is honesty: being clear about what we do well, what we're actively improving, and what we haven't solved yet. We'd rather tell you the truth than greenwash our way to a clean conscience.

Here's where we are right now — the good and the still-in-progress.

✓ What we do well
EU and UK silicone sourcing with full traceability. Zero PLA to landfill via CastOff. Right-sized packaging. Plant-based printing materials. UK manufacturing with no international shipping emissions in our production chain.
→ What we're actively improving
Transitioning to fully plastic-free dispatch packaging by end of 2026. Exploring industrial PLA composting partnerships. Increasing CastOff output and making more pieces available.
○ What we haven't solved yet
Silicone recycling at scale doesn't currently exist in the UK. We're watching this space closely. When viable options emerge, we'll adopt them. Until then, we minimise silicone waste at source through precise production planning and tell you exactly where we stand.
